DESCRIPTION: Moderate step deviation is seen under column 5, 6, 7 and 8.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – small die gouge above the R in LIBERTY.

Reverse is MDS – die gouge over the lower left period in EPU.

DESCRIPTION: Somewhat mushy fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 3. Moderate step deviation is seen under columns 5, 6, 7 and 8, with an offset direction of 200 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – die gouge under the S of TRUST. Strong metal flow lines are seen from the last T in TRUST to the rim.

Reverse is LDS – die gouge above right cornice tip. Die fatigue shows on various places in the field on the reverse.

DESCRIPTION: Light trails from the letters in EPU, with an offset direction of 330 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is MDS – elongated die gouge over the V of VDB.

Reverse is LDS – die gouges on the O and N of ONE.

 

1996P-1DER-015T                                     330°

DESCRIPTION: Moderate trails are seen from the letters of EPU and the last S in STATES and the letters in OF. The offset direction is 330 degrees.

Similar to 1996P-1DER-014T, this die has different die markers and stronger trail intensity.

DIE MAKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – long die crack from Lincoln’s ear to the rim.

Reverse is LDS – die gouge, left bottom of the U in UNITED.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate trails from the letters in EPU, the last  S in STATES, the letters in OF and the MER of AMERICA. This die is similar to both 1996P-1DTR-014 and 015, however, the die markers are different and the other two dies did not have trails from AMERICA. As seen from the above pictures, the die deterioration and flow lines tend to obliterate the trails near the rim. This is most evident in the case with the word STATES.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is LEDS – die gouge well below the E in LIBERTY

Reverse is ELDS – two die. scratches over the CE of CENT.

Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – heavy die scratching on the entire obverse. Die gouge is still visible.

Reverse is LDS – Heavy die scratching on the reverse, especially around ONE.

Stage “D”, obverse is EDS – obverse die has been changed. Die gouge between the 9 and 6 of the date.

Reverse is VLDS – two die chips have developed in columns 1 and 2. Heavy metal flow lines near the rim.

DESCRIPTION: Light to moderate step deviation under columns 5, 6, 7 and 8, with emphasis on the right side.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – die damage above the R in LIBERTY.

Reverse is MDS – old die dot between column 12 and the last A in AMERICA.

NOTE: This die was found by Joshua Haynes of Alabama.

 

1996P-1DER-018T                                     340°


DESCRIPTION: Strong trail lines from the tops of EPU, STATES, OF and most of the letters in AMERICA. Trails are also seen in some of the letters in UNITED and from the left corners of the cornice. Faint trails are also seen from the F of the designer’s initials. The offset direction is 340 degrees. While this die is similar to 1996P-1DER-016T in both intensity and position of the trail lines, the die markers are different.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – die chip on the lower right base of Lincoln’s bust.

Reverse is LDS – Die scrapes are seen through the T of CENT.

Stage “D”, obverse is VLDS – strong metal flow lines are seen over WE TRUST.

Reverse is VLDS – same as Stage “C”.

NOTE: Stage “C” die was found by Louis Schaeffer.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate trail lines seen from all elements of the EPU. Trail lines are also present on the upper parts of the letters in STATES and also the lower termini of the Ss in STATES. Trail lines can be seen on the left tops of columns # 4 through 12. Light “bumps” can be seen on the TED of UNITED from the trails that have crossed over those letters. Distortion, plus trail lines are present on the word OF. The offset direction of all these lines is 330 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – light die scratching under the beard and neck of Lincoln. A curved die scratch from Lincoln’s head to the Y of LIBERTY is seen. Another short die scratch is also seen on the nape of the neck.

Reverse is EMDS – small die gouge in the C of CENT. Small die gouge is seen to the right of the crossbar of the T in CENT.

DESCRIPTION: Light trail lines are seen from the EPU, the last S of STATES and OF, with an offset direction of 340º.

Reverse is MDS – die crack from the U to the  N of UNUM

Stage “C”, obverse is LMDS – none observed.

Reverse is LMDS – die chip on the left cornice edge. Die crack from the U to the N of UNUM. Die chip in the N of UNUM.  Die gouge under the U of to the UNITED. Die scratching is seen through ONE and CENT.
