DESCRIPTION: Moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 2 and 3. Moderate to strong step deviation is seen under columns 5 through 8 with an offset direction of 200 degrees. Also seen are faint trail lines from some of the bottom corners of the letters in EPU.

1998P-1DER-026T 240°, 310°
DESCRIPTION: A complicated “trail” with two different directions.
The first offset direction, 240 degrees, is highlighted with black arrows, while the 310 degree offset is highlighted with white arrows.
The above picture shows trails and distortion from the tops of the letter in EPU. These trail lines are at 310 degrees.
Trail lines are seen on the letters in STATES and also the word OF. Trails are also present on the word AMERICA
Trail lines are seen on the letters in STATES and also the word OF. Trails are also present on the word AMERICA
The tops of all the columns are again affected by the 310 degree extension as is the scrolling on the cornice.
This pattern of extensions follows through down to the corners of the left edge of the stylobate and base. Also notice the heavy distortion and trails on UNITED.
Even the two urns have trails from their left top corners, as well as the word ONE.
While the majority of the design elements have been extended towards 310 degrees, there is evidence that a second direction is also present on this die. The CE of CENT and the D of UNITED show a set of trail lines with a direction of 240 degrees.
This dual direction is best illustrated with the E of EPU, which shows a trail from the left top corner of that letter in the direction of 310 degrees and another trail from the lower left corner in a direction of 240 degrees.
DIE MARKERS: Stage “A”, obverse is LEDS – die dots on either side of the loop of the second nine in the date.
Reverse is LEDS – light die clash in bay 4 and 9 (see photo of posts). Die scratches from the left base tip. Die dot over the left base corner.
1998P-1DER-027T 060°, 260°
DESCRIPTION: Strong trails are seen on AMERICA and STATES. There are some trail lines present on the letters of EPU. Also seen are trails on the ED of UNITED, the NT of CENT and the E of ONE. There is another set of trails, in a different direction, on the N and E of ONE. This was validated by Bob Piazza who also has this die in a better grade and earlier die state. The offset direction is 060 and 260 degrees. This die was found by Joe Koelling of North Carolina and it is a major trail die.
DIE MAKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – die crack on Lincoln’s nose.
Reverse is MDS – die gouge between the R and I of AMERICA.
1998P-1DER-028T 330°

Design extension continues on TES OF AMER (STATES OF AMERICA) with light trails seen on the word CENT. The left URN and the statue of Lincoln both have trail lines. A secondary coin submitted by Thomas Summers showed trails also on the FG and CENT.
