Stage “B” Pictures by Billy Crawford
DESCRIPTION: A massive “trail” die that shows distortion to just about every design element on the reverse except for the word ONE. Lincoln’s statue is decidedly lopsided as is the right URN, looking more like Liberty’s torch than anything else. Even the designer’s initials are distorted into configuration. The scroll on the left cornice resembles the lower jaw of a shark; with teeth pointed inward. The offset direction of the all the trails is 040 degrees. The last picture, just above, shows a magnified trail line from the bottom of the T in CENT. Notice that it is not straight, but squiggles a bit and broadens near its end. This is just another factor that supports this type of anomaly as being a design extension and not design duplication. The in hand analysis of this die was on a poor quality coin that had suffered environmental damage. One of better quality may show sharper trails.
DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – none observed.
Reverse is MDS – die chips on the middle column 2 and the left side of the left URN (POST).
Stage “C”, obverse is MDS – none observed
Reverse is MDS – die chips on the top of column 1, the middle of column 2 and the left side of the left URN (POST)
