1992D-1DER-007WST                    020º, 180°

DESCRIPTION: A complicated die that shows two different directions. While the EPU, OF, the right upper edge of the cornice and the first A in AMERICA show a direction of 020º, the designer’s initials, CENT and ONE show trails in a direction of 180º. Also noted is the column extension into the stylobate under columns 10, 11 and 12. This die was found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – none noted.

Reverse is MDS – none noted.

1992D-1DER-008WST                   150º, 180°

DESCRIPTION: This is an excellent example of a dual direction trail die. The die shows movement not only to the northwest (330º), but also the reciprocal bearing of 150 degrees. The upper portion of the die tends to show the northerly lines while the bottom shows the southerly directed trail lines. It is in the middle of the die that both directional lines are apparent. Notice that the lines on the EPU are from the top left corners of those letters affected. The right corner of the roof and cornice on the Memorial Building show these dual directional lines, while further down, the designer’s initials and corner of the base show lines at 150 degrees.

Both UNITED and STATES show trail lines with a 330 degree direction. Notice that a trail line intersects the first T of STATES; this is from the E in EPU and is in the same direction as t he lines in STATES.

While the ER of AMERICA show trail lines at 330 degrees, the C and A show lines to the south. The last A in AMERICA is the only letter to show trail lines in both directions. The right levels of the stylobate show some line extensions form the columns and corners that are an exact match in direction of the lines from the designer’s initials and base corner. The last area is the word CENT which also shows trail lines in a direction of 150 degrees. Although this may seem to be a complicated die, it is not. More than likely the dual directions were caused by a snap back action, with the die first moving towards the south (causing the 330º lines) and then snapping back to the north (causing the 150º lines). This die was found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – die dot above the E of LIBERTY. A small die gouge is seen to the left of the DATE.

Reverse is MDS – none noted.

1992D-1DER-009WST                          190º

DESCRIPTION: Moderate to strong fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 2, 3, 11 and 12. Strong step deviation under columns 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. What is unusual for this die is to see the extension of fluting lines, in a southwest direction, under the right side columns. Trails are also encountered on this die, mainly on the TED of UNITED, the A of STATES and the E of EPU. Also seen are faint indications of trails in the ON of ONE and the ENT of CENT. The offset direction for all trail lines on this die is 190 degrees. This die was found and photographed by Bob Piazza of Florida.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – die gouge under the R of TRUST.

Reverse is EDS – die scratch from the D of UNITED to the E of EPU. Die scratches in bay 6. A small vertical die gouge is seen in the cornice, above column 6.

1992D-1DER-010T                                    030º

DESCRIPTION: Very light trails are seen on the upper right corner of the letters in EPU. Also seen are trail lines, mixed in with the flow lines, on the word AMERICA. An earlier die state coin will more than likely show better trail definition. The offset direction is 030 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “D”, obverse is VLDS – numerous light die scratches are seen in and around the ear area of Lincoln.

Reverse is VLDS – an old die gouge is seen under the U of UNITED.

NOTE: This die was found by Bill Slaughter.
