                                                                 STAGE “D”

DESCRIPTION: Very strong trails from EPU that fade as the die state progresses. Strong trails can also be seen from STATES OF, the top edge of the cornice, the left corner of the roof and the tops of the columns. This die also has split columns on the left on columns 8, 10 and 12. The offset direction is 330 degrees.

The major difference in the stages is the fading or lessening of the trail line intensity. In some areas, the trail lines have disappeared as in the lines seen from ONE in Stage “C”.

Reverse is EMDS – none noted.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – two light die scratches underneath Lincoln’s chin.

Reverse is LDS – die gouge in the last A of AMERICA. Light die scratching evident in the bays and below the base line.

Stage “D”, obverse is VLDS – the die scratches have disappeared. The die appears to have been abraded.

Reverse is VLDS – die gouge in the A of AMERICA remains the same. Heavier die scratching is seen under the base line from abrading a die clash (second?)

NOTE: Stage “B” die was found by Jason Dick

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – small die gouge below the RU of TRUST

Reverse is MDS – die gouge below right Memorial building base. Light die scratches on the entire reverse.

1994P-1DER-028WS                                180º

DESCRIPTION: Moderate step deviation is seen under columns 5 through 8.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – die gouge between LIBERTY and IN

Reverse is LDS – die gouge between the U of UNITED and the first column.

1994P-1DER-029T                                    150º

DESCRIPTION: Trails from the interior letters in EPU, the T and E of UNTIED and the TES of STATES. There is also a small trail on the E and T of CENT. All trail lines are in an offset direction of 150 degrees. This die was found by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas.

One thing that sets this die off from a doubled die is the slight curvature of the trail lines from the EPU. While the movement of the die against the hub at the end of hubbing may not be fully understood, this curvature would not happen if it were a true doubled die.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – small die dot to the right of the second 9 in the date.

Reverse is MDS – small die dot in the U of UNITED.

Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – none observed.

Reverse is LDS – die chip on the upper left side of column # 2.

1994P-1DER-030WST                              180º

DESCRIPTION: Moderate, mushy fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under column 10. Light step deviation under columns 4 through 7, with an offset direction of 160 degrees. There is the possibility that there is step deviation under column 8 in earlier die states, however, in this LDS condition, die scratches in that area make it hard to confirm. There are also slight indications of trails on the second T of states, the M of UNUM and the E of CENT. Small short trail lines are seen from the second T of STATES. A cross over trail is seen on the E.

Slight indications of trails, along with some distortion on the bottom of some of the letters in EPU are seen.

Since this coin is LDS the intensity of the trail lines may have been adversely affected. EDS and MDS coins will more than likely have sharper and more easily seen trail lines from affected design elements.

A faint trail line is seen on the C of AMERICA. Another cross over trail line is seen on the E of CENT and a trail line is detected on the bottom of the N.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “D”, obverse is VLDS – diagonal gouge next to the left side of the L in LIBERTY.

Reverse is VLDS – moderate die scratching through the stairs and some of the bays. A die gouge is seen over the designer’s initials.
