1994P-1DER-041T 140°, 310°
DESCRIPTION: A complicated “trail” die with lines in two offset directions; 140 and 310 degrees. The 140 degree lines are indicated by the red arrows and the 310 degree lines are indicated by the green arrows. The mushy appearance of the trail lines is due to the later die state of the coin, however, earlier die states of this die should show sharp lines and possible more trails. This die was found by Bob Piazza of Florida.
The top of the letters in UNI of UNITED show “trails” at 310 degrees while the ED of UNITED show “trails” at 140 degrees. Also note the “trails” from the cornice and roof tips at 310 degrees.
The first S in STATES is the only design element to have “trails” in both directions. The right base tip of the Memorial building shows a “trail” with a direction of 140 degrees.
The C, N and T of CENT also show “trails” in the 140 degree direction. Exactly why this die has two different directional “trails” is uncertain, but we can surmise that there was movement of the die, during the hubbing process, in different directions.

DESCRIPTION: While not a strong trail die, it is however a nice one. Most of the letters in EPU have trail lines from the top left of the letters affected. The columns from # 2 to 7 have trail lines from the top left corners. The last S in States has a trail line from its bottom terminus. The right post has a trail line from its top. The two Ts in STATES have small humps on top of the horizontal bars as do the E and D of UNITED, pictured below. The offset direction for these trail lines is 330 degrees.

DESCRIPTION: The picture used is of an old die state coin and the trail lines have faded. EPU does have trail lines from the left top of the majority of the letters. The E and the last S of STATES show indications of trail lines as does the word OF. The offset direction is 350 degrees.

DESCRIPTION: Light fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 3, 11 and 12. Moderate step deviation is seen under columns 5, 6, 7 and 8.
DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – die gouge in the field below the ER of LIBERTY.
Reverse is LDS – short, heavy die scratch on the lower terminus of the first S in STATES.

DESCRIPTION: Strong “trail” lines from most of the letters in EPU, STATES and AMERICA. Notice the crossover “trail” lines on the last A of AMERICA. Trail lines from the top scrolling of the cornice, the column tops, Lincoln’s statue, the intersection where the column meets the floor of the bays and both URNS (POSTS). Notice that the corners of the stylobate and the designer’s initials also have trail lines. All trail lines have an offset direction of 050 degrees.
Trail lines continue on the N and E of ONE and the T of CENT. Notice the crossover line on the T.

DESCRIPTION: Fluting line extension is seen under all columns and also the F in the designer’s initials. The offset direction is 180º. This die was found by Louis Schaeffer of Maryland.

STAGE “C”
DESCRIPTION: Strong trail lines from all the letters in EPU. Also seen are extensions from the bottom of NITE of UNITED and all the letters in STATES. This die is very similar to 1994P-1DER-045T.
The trails carry through to the word CENT where they are seen on the termini of CEN. The last area is the statue of Lincoln where trails are again seen. All lines have on offset direction of 050 degrees.
Trail lines can also be seen on all the letters in AMERICA, except for the last A, both URNS and the top left cornice edge. There are trails from the tops of most columns (not shown) and the right corners of the stylobate and designer’s initials.
